Tattoo aftercare guide for cleaning and maintaining new ink

Complete Tattoo Aftercare Guide & Healing Steps

Phase 1: Immediate Care & Washing

  • 1. Bandage & Initial Wrapping First, leave the sterile gauze bandage on for 1 to 4 hours after leaving the studio. Consequently, this protects your open skin from early bacterial exposure. Next, carefully remove the wrapping to clean the area.
  • 2. Washing Your Tattoo Gently wash the skin with warm water and mild unscented antibacterial soap. Furthermore, use only clean hands rather than washcloths. Be sure to remove all plasma so that you avoid thick scabbing.
  • 3. Drying Technique After washing, gently pat the tattoo dry with a soft paper towel. However, never scrub or use cloth towels because they can harbor unwanted bacteria.

Phase 2: Moisturizing & Maintenance

  • 4. Applying Moisturizer A few days later, begin applying a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion. For instance, options like Jergens, Keri Lotion, or Tattoo Goo work great. As a result, your skin stays hydrated without feeling wet.
  • 5. Avoid Over-Moisturizing Additionally, if your skin looks runny or glossy, you have used too much lotion. Therefore, dab off any excess product so your skin can breathe properly.
  • 6. Avoid Harsh Chemicals & Fragrances During the healing phase, avoid products with heavy perfumes, colors, or glitter. Instead, rely solely on gentle alternatives for 2 to 4 weeks.

Phase 3: Important Rules & Protection

  • 7. Sun Protection & UV Ray Exposure Keep your new tattoo completely out of direct sunlight. Otherwise, severe sunburns will delay healing and fade fresh ink.
  • 8. Showering vs. Soaking Avoid baths or long showers for two weeks. Likewise, keep shower times under 10 minutes so that scab structures stay intact.
  • 9. No Scratching or Picking Although itching is expected, never pick at flaking skin. Instead, tap or slap the surrounding area gently to relieve discomfort.
  • 10. Minimize Friction High-movement placement areas require careful attention. For this reason, wear loose clothing over fresh tattoos to limit rubbing.
  • 11. Avoid Pools, Lakes & Hot Tubs Finally, do not submerge your tattoo in swimming pools, lakes, or hot tubs. Doing so introduces bacteria and dramatically increases your risk of infection.
